SEOUL, South Korea — The Art & Technology Lab (AT Lab) of the Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts, Acting President Lee Young-hee) will participate in the 1st Seoul Global AI Film Festa (SGAFF), unveiling its specially produced screening piece ⟪PULSE⟫ and hosting a conference on the theme of “AI Actors.” The festival will take place from September 30 (Tuesday) to October 2 (Thursday) at COEX in Seoul.

The Seoul Global AI Film Festa (SGAFF) is Korea’s first and largest festival dedicated to AI-generated films, jointly organized by MBC, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Designed to explore the creative potential of generative AI in the arts, the festival aims to establish a new creative ecosystem where technology and culture converge. Under the slogan “Dances with A.I: The Harmony of Humans and Artificial Intelligence,” this year’s event features a wide range of programs, including screenings and competitions of AI-powered works, international conferences, and industry networking sessions.

On the festival’s second day, K-Arts AT Lab will present its special screening ⟪PULSE⟫, created using generative AI technologies, followed by a thematic conference session.

After the screening, the creative team will share behind-the-scenes insights into the production process. Professor Seungmoo Lee, head of AT Lab and faculty member of the K-Arts School of Film, will deliver a keynote presentation titled “From Virtual Human Actors to AI Performers: K-Arts AT Lab’s AI·XR Roadmap.”

Following this, Jeon Nuri (AT Lab alumna, School of Multimedia Film) and Lim Min-jae (current student, Multimedia Film) will present on “The Possibilities and Limitations of AI Actors” and “Emotional Interaction Between AI Actors and Audiences.” Lee Do-ha, a graduate of the K-Arts Acting Department and current student in Multimedia Film, will conclude the session with a presentation titled “What AI Actors Cannot Do,” inviting reflection on the artistic and ethical boundaries of artificial performers.

Professor Seungmoo Lee, Director of AT Lab, noted: “Through this work and discussion, we hope to reflect on both the fundamental possibilities and the inherent limitations of AI in creative fields—using real-world examples as a basis for critical dialogue.”

The AT Lab at K-Arts serves as a creative research hub aimed at integrating science, technology, art, and education. The lab’s acclaimed works such as Scarecrow and Rain Fruits have been featured at major global film festivals including Sundance, Cannes, and Tribeca, earning multiple awards. In 2025 alone, AT Lab has achieved significant international milestones—Fly To You was invited to SXSW (South by Southwest), Scarecrow: Rekindle won at the Raindance Film Festival, and 8PM and the Cat was officially selected for the Venice International Film Festival’s Immersive Competition. These achievements reaffirm K-Arts’ global creative capacity in convergence arts education.

Furthermore, AT Lab continues to lead innovation in AI storytelling and cultural technology (CT), supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) through the Global CT Talent Development Project. In collaboration with Studio Dragon, AT Lab is also pioneering an AI drama production project, advancing R&D and global commercialization in the field of AI-driven storytelling.
