Korea National University of Arts (KARTS) AT Lab Showcases Cutting-Edge AI and XR Research at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024 in Tokyo
The Art & Technology Lab (AT Lab) at the Center for Convergent Arts, Korea National University of Arts (KARTS, President Daejin Kim), participated in the world-renowned SIGGRAPH Asia 2024 conference in Tokyo, Japan, to present its latest research outcomes.
SIGGRAPH Asia is the premier global conference and exhibition for computer graphics and interactive techniques, bringing together international leaders across science, gaming, animation, CGI, and emerging technology.

Representing the 2024 Global Cultural Technology (CT) Professional Human Resources Development Project—supported by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)—AT Lab presented its latest project-based creative works and two research posters:
- Empathic Scoring System for AI Characters in VR:
Conducted jointly with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), this study designed an "Empathic Scoring System" to heighten emotional connections between users and AI characters in virtual reality environments. Leveraging user testing and playthroughs of their previous work, Diamond Dust, the researchers significantly enhanced emotion-recognition precision, demonstrating potential applications across education, therapy, and entertainment.
- Artistic Noise Amplification in Gaussian Splatting:
Partnering with 3D tech company ReconLabs, this study introduced a novel technique that intentionally amplifies noise within Gaussian Splatting—a photorealistic 3D representation technology—to create painterly visual aesthetics. The technique was showcased through the artwork Talgeonim, earning widespread praise for its abstract, innovative interpretation of traditional Korean masks.
In addition, AT Lab exhibited its volumetric documentary SAMUL—previously invited to prestigious international venues such as the 2024 Ars Electronica Festival and the Kaohsiung International Film Festival—drawing strong interest from attendees.
Insights from the Project Director
"SIGGRAPH provides a vital platform not only for expanding our academic horizons, but also for building global networks with industry leaders. We hope this participation serves as a springboard to elevate our AI-driven creative and research capabilities to the next level."
— Seung-Mu Lee, Director of KARTS AT Lab & Professor at the School of Film, TV & Multimedia
Building on its achievements at SIGGRAPH Asia, AT Lab will continue to accelerate creative research and talent development spanning AI and XR technologies, driving forward new possibilities at the intersection of art and technology.
